The Graduate Program in Engineering (PPEng) was created in October 2010, when CAPES approved the proposal for its creation, in the area of Engineering III, as an Academic Master’s degree. The first class of the program started in August 2011 and, until January 2021, PPEng graduated 90 students. In 2020, the program underwent a major reform, and in 2021, PPEng had its request for a change of basic area approved by CAPES, moving to the basic area of Engineering I.
In the 2017-2020 quadrennial assessment, released in the second half of 2022, PPEng scored 4, which allowed the program to request the opening of a doctoral program with CAPES. As a result, PPEng employed its efforts during the second half of 2022, and in January 2023, the proposal for the opening of a doctoral program was sent to CAPES. On June 7, 2023, CAPES announced the approval of the request for a Doctorate in Engineering at Alegrete campus. With this result, PPEng strengthens itself by offering the first doctorate in the city of Alegrete and the first doctorate in the field of Engineering in the entire western region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The research conducted in the program is mainly aimed at meeting regional demands in solving problems in the area of materials technology and the environment within the context of Engineering I. PPEng has a concentration area, Technology of Materials and Environment, to which the three research lines of the program are linked: Materials and Structures; Modeling and Simulation; New materials and their technological applications (more information here).
